Just because they become more democratic doesn't mean they're on anybody's side. The Chinese are for the Chinese. Whether or not they are a democratic regime, they will defend what they perceive to be their national interests -- all nations do. And should those interests be in opposition with yours, China will be your enemy. As China's economy increases, it's influence will grow, and as that happens, it will naturally clash with the West. Democracy means nothing, national interests mean everything.
