How do you make a fleece blanket?

I have some nice fleece fabric, and I want to make a nice blanket. *Not* one of the ones where you just clip the edges of two kinds of fleece and tie them together. I want to really sew it. And also, how do you wash fleece? Should I wash it before I sew it like you do with other fabrics?
